The Golden Temple, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib, is the most sacred shrine of Sikhism, located in the heart of Amritsar, Punjab. Founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, and later completed by Guru Arjan Dev in 1604, the temple stands as a symbol of universal brotherhood and spiritual freedom. Unlike traditional temples, the Golden Temple was built at a lower level than the surrounding land, signifying humility. Its four entrances represent openness and acceptance to all, regardless of religion, caste, or creed. The temple's structure was embellished with marble and gold in the 19th century by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the leader of the Sikh Empire. At the heart of the temple lies the holy scripture of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib, which is recited continuously throughout the day. The surrounding Amrit Sarovar (Pool of Nectar) adds to its serene and reflective ambiance, drawing millions of visitors and devotees from around the world each year.
